I hate rules. I hate that there is a necessity for them to exist here, but that's the way it is.
I see rules as a way to force people to do what they should be doing in the first place, being nice, considerate, thoughtful, and generally making use of tact and common sense. We're all human and we all slip up from time to time, but for the most part we act appropriatly without having to reference the rules for every sentence we write. Yes, they are a form of censorship- but what they are censoring are things that we should be intelligent enough not to say or do in the first place.
That being said, I'm going to have to insist upon adding a new rule to our collection. Most of us know that to use "gay" as a synonym for "stupid" is highly offensive, and should not be done for that reason alone. But it would seem that it's no longer good enough for that to be one of the unwritten laws of a polite society. Its use has become more and more frequent and it is not, never has been, or ever will be appropriate or anything less than a homophobic slur.
A censorship-free world isn't going to be achieved by overusing offensive profanity in front of people who are upset by it, that will only perpetuate more rules to do the job the brain should be doing. It's going to be achieved by knowing that there is a time and a place for everything and being able to differentiate between those times and places.
A good alternative to "That's gay" is "That's lame" try it, you might like it.
Over and out!

"You lot. You spend all your time thinking about dying, like you're going to get killed by eggs, or beef, or global warming, or asteroids. But you never take time to imagine the impossible. That maybe you survive." ~Doctor Who
