In my experiance a pre-coded board is no more or less stable than an independent one. Also, there are a lot of resources available to help establish a board for ourselves. I do agree that if we want to persue this course we should get started right away. As I doubt any of us are able to devote our time solely to this project, allowing some spare time would be best. Of course, if it isn't done in time, we could surely do some "temporary parking" on the yuko board, but I would really rather not. yuko seems to just be everything I dislike about EZ lumped into one big mess of a board.

So long as my mate isn't in training at the time, I could maybe get him to help out to. He isn't much for coding, but he has helped set up things like this for two MMO guilds and a few wrestling e-feds, so he may have a few tips.

Yuku didn't look that bad to me... it just seemed... bland. I realize that it can be customized and such, but if we're gonna go through all that trouble we might as well have our own board. *cheers* Question, though... would having our own domain make us more susceptible to such evils as the dreaded ezHack of '05?

Probably less, Balth, because people are less inclined to bother with a small personal board instead of a large corporation like EZBoard.

I also have friends with great technical skills who can make us pretty safe.

Oh my god. Yuki annoys me a LOT. I want to be a part of the Gryphon Guild. And the gryphon guild ONLY. I too, vote for our own board. I tried to look at Yuku, and it told me I had to switch my login over first, then the site crashed on me in the process of doing so. So, yeah.

We will have a chat of some sort on the site, java or otherwise (whatever seems to work best and most reliably and be easy to use). I'm looking into options now.

No to Yuku.

We wont have to pay for gold membership anymore, we can have chat and board set up entirely how we want it. So long as we can find a good couple of coders.

However I am conserned about the load on the server. Can it take our board?

Yeah, it can. If not I'll see about buying space from someone else I know who runs huge traffic communities. (I already pay for the gryphguild.org space, so I'd just switch over, it wouldn't be a new expense.)

I think an idependent board is the way to go. Yuko is incrediblely slow. This is coming from someone who's computer (go comcast!) goes to the next page within seconds of clicking.

Hello.

I found your board while looking for ezboard/yuku info. Frankly I'm just a passerby, but I'm rather disillusioned with the company ever since the whole meltdown in 2005. Our board has since moved (to a phpbb board) and other associates of our site have left for new grounds too (vbulletin, invisionfree). I found your board using a Google search.

There is a lot of information out there being discussed that are not openly permitted either at Ezboard or Yuku help. Indeed, Yuku now has a "vault" section on their help forums where they put posts that are not on topic...to put it nicely...anti-Yuku or ranting to put it plainly). In fact, they also have announced that they will not tolerate such topics:

Anyway there are two sites I've found (which link to each other) that contain information you may find of use. I hope what I'm linking you to is informative and helpful. I don't pretend to know whether this information is 100% reliable, but it makes sense to me:

For self-hosting vBulletin is best. In fact they will port your entire board for you (for a fee). Also, when you compare their liscense and the cost of a hosting service to the amount of money ezboard charges (for gold), you will often find that they are much less. Further, if you install a stat-counter (on your ezboard) and compare the numbers you see from that as compared to what ezboard says are the actual numbers, one can often find a large discrepancy.

For a web-hosted board, I would try out invisionfree. First of all, you get many features that are found on ezboard gold FOR FREE. Invisionfree has some ads, but they are way less intrusive and you can pay a small fee to get rid of the ads...far less than what ezboard charges. They are developing a new system called Zetaboards there, but unlike the haphazard development of Yuku, they tell you what features they are incorporating, and they WILL NOT RELEASE until they have a working, nearly bug free product.

In fact, invisionfree is actually outdoing ezboard, something one would not notice if only going by what ezboard says:

Might as well poke my two cents here.... even though I'm seldom about the board.... but anyway.... most prehosting boards are a bit slow on just about any sort of connection speed... I belong to quite a few..... though if you're looking to go that route, Proboards seems farely simple to use and controll. The only non-prehosted boards I've been to is the PHPbb forums.... which are a bit of a pain to set up... also, open sorce codes make it easy for hackers to break them down, so I would highly suggest against that option.
With the site that I have and the host that I use gives quite a few options for forum boards, though most of those options take MySQL space, which you'd need for almost any board you dicide to do on your own server / host, if the host even has that option.
Most of these options don't include a chat, though with one PHPbb style of forum I'm a memeber to, someone has worked the code (Which is mostly what PHP is) to include a weblink to a webstyle IRC clent which then automatically joins the IRC channel... quite a few places are doing this.... such a weblink doesn't have to be in PHP code from what I know.... though getting such codes will not be easy.
Whatever choice you decide to make is up to you.... if you do decide to go with PHPbb services, I have a few friends who know of ways to make the merger farely simple from EZBoard to PHP, right down to just about every post made here.
